Io odio viaggiare, quando sono a Milano. Quando torno alla base, mi rendo conto che viaggiare è un gran casino, che ho creato io.
Qualche tempo fa mi sembrava di non capirci niente della vita e di essere vittima del giudizio degli altri. Quindi se prima, stavo male senza accorgermene, ora sono consapevole di stare bene e lo voglio celebrare. Però voglio anche lamentarmi.
Ciao sono Ilaria! E da un paio d’anni mi ascolto, faccio quello che mi piace e che voglio. Tutto merito di un gran lavoro su me stessa. E anche questo va celebrato. In particolare, sono un paio d’anni che viaggio e lavoro da remoto, senza fissa dimora. Ed è proprio questo uno degli svantaggi del viaggio full time.

Gli oggetti materiali
Sono a Milano, mi aggiro per via Stendhal con una valigia troppo pesante, è ottobre fa caldo, troppo caldo per strascinarsi vestiti e oggetti materiali.
E poi quante volte ho vissuto questa scena nella mia vita?
Io, uno zaino o una valigia, il caldo, i capelli crespi, quel senso di sfinimento e tanta voglia di non pagare un taxi. Non lo pago a Milano, ma non lo pago nemmeno in Vietnam, in Colombia. Non so perché, potrei permettermelo, ma semplicemente non lo faccio o meglio lo faccio a volte. Quando ne vale veramente la pena. E quindi adesso non ne vale la pena: pagare per spostare i miei oggetti.
A volte penso che potrei comprare due o tre jeans e due o tre magliette. Tutti uguale, ma di colori diversi. Per un periodo l’ho fatto a Melbourne, era inverno. Avevo le Stan Smith, i jeans, uno blu e uno nero, i maglioncini, uno rosso, uno nero e uno grigio e il cappottino verde. Punto. Mi sentivo così sicura di me, che è il periodo della mia vita in cui ho rimorchiato di più.
Mi sembrava di avere più tempo e più soldi, non mi preoccupavo di fare shopping, di scegliere gli abbinamenti, di cosa mettermi. Mi preoccupavo di vivere la mia vita, non di apparire.
Gli oggetti materiali continuano a chiederti tempo e soldi, anche quando li hai già pagati. Cioè non è che li compri e sei a posto. Poi li devi lavare, curare, conservare, aggiustare. E continui a spendere soldi. Li devi spostare, portare con te, selezionare, vendere, regalare. E cosi continui a perdere tempo. Occupandoti di oggetti principalmente. Senza considerare che fai riflessioni del tipo: “Devo comprare una lampada che stia bene lì, una maglietta che si abbini alla gonna, quel nuovo tagliere, quel nuovo completino per yoga”. E così continui ad avere altri oggetti di cui ti dovrai occupare.
Adesso sono a Milano, guardo il mio box auto, che è una via di mezzo tra un negozio di cianfrusaglie di Ho Chi Minh e la mia cameretta da bambina e penso: a Jericoacoara non mi dovevo occupare di nessun oggetto e non erano importanti i capelli, il sudore, gli abbinamenti.
Ma come fanno le altre?
Ogni volta mi chiedo, quando mi guardo l’ascella pezzata, come fanno le altre? Perché le altre non hanno i vestiti stropicciati, perché hanno i capelli belli, perché sono vestite bene, perché restituiscono quel senso di bellezza, ordine, eleganza e ricchezza. E io invece sembro sempre una scappata di casa. Ma proprio fuggita di fretta, arraffando cose a caso.
Me lo chiede anche mio padre un giorno, mentre mi accompagna a comprare uno zainetto da trekking da 26 litri, per le escursioni brevi di uno o due giorni. Io inizialmente non so cosa rispondere, perché non c’è un motivo specifico per cui non appaio come vorrei o meglio come mi vorrebbero gli altri. Ma anche io, in fondo in fondo, vorrei presentarmi perfetta, come le altre.
Vorrei indossare il top macramé per fare colazione in spiaggia a Jericoacoara, sfoggiare una gonna lunga per una serata a Cartagena, un vestitino bianco per un pomeriggio a Byron Bay, un abitino a a fiori per una passeggiata a Napoli, il bikini rosso e il pareo abbinato a Puerto Escondido, la maglietta crop, ma non troppo, per il trekking a Chapada Diamantina.
E invece no. È tutto un casino, è tutto sparpagliato tra casa dei miei genitori e un box auto, è tutto precario, i vestiti sono stropicciati, alcuni non mi stanno più, altri sono da sistemare, altri sono da vendere, altri ancora da regalare. Non so dove sono le cose, le perdo, le ricompro, mi aggiro preparando zaini, valigie, pensando già come mi vestirò tra due mesi. Devo pensare a tutto e questo tutto deve essere poco. Devo essere pronta al freddo, al caldo, alla pioggia, allo sport, al mare, alla montagna e alla città.
Ma non è un po’ troppo da chiedere?
Così ci penso un attimo e rispondo a mio papà che forse le altre non conoscono il Brasile. Forse non hanno visto l’Amazzonia e i caimani, non hanno fatto un trekking in Cile di tre giorni, non hanno nuotato nel lago Atitlán, non hanno vissuto un mese in un centro di yoga, non conoscono tutti gli angoli di Cusco e della Valle Sagrada, non sono state ad uno spettacolo di tango a Buenos Aires, non hanno visto i pinguini ad Ushuaia, non hanno vissuto tre settimane in mezzo alle piantagioni del caffè in Colombia, non hanno girato per Puerto Escondido in motorino, non hanno preso un autobus di 28 ore attraverso la mitica Ruta 40, non hanno dormito in tutti gli ostelli del Guatemala e non si sono gettate nelle acque ghiacciate (altrimenti si sarebbero rovinate i capelli).
O forse sì, queste ragazze hanno fatto tutte queste cose e hanno ancora un bell’aspetto. Se sei una di queste ragazze, per favore scrivimi un commento e spiegami come si fa. Come si fa a fare viaggi da 30 ore, a prendere autobus, a trascinarsi gli zaini, a vedere le albe, a camminare sotto il sole o sotto la pioggia ed essere ancora carine. Come si fa?
Poi non mi rivolgo solo alle donne. C’è questa teoria e devo ammettere che anche io l’ho pensato ogni tanto: “Eh ma per gli uomini è più facile!Basta un jeans e una maglietta”. Uomini, lettori di questa newsletter, è veramente più facile?

This is why I hate travelling
I hate traveling, at least when I'm in Milan. When I return home, I realize that traveling is a huge mess—one that I’ve created myself.
Some time ago, I felt like I couldn’t figure out life and was a victim of others’ judgments. So, if before I was feeling bad without realizing it, now I know I’m doing well and I want to celebrate that. But I also want to complain.
Hi, I’m Ilaria! And for the past couple of years, I’ve been listening to myself, doing what I like and what I want. All thanks to a lot of work on myself. And that deserves to be celebrated too. For the last two years, I’ve been traveling and working remotely, with no permanent home. And that’s one of the downsides of full-time travel.

Material possessions
I’m in Milan, wandering around Via Stendhal with a suitcase that’s too heavy. It’s October, and it’s hot—too hot to drag around clothes and material objects.
And how many times have I lived through this scene in my life?
Me, with a backpack or a suitcase, the heat, frizzy hair, that feeling of exhaustion, and a strong desire not to pay for a taxi. I don’t pay for one in Milan, but I don’t pay for one in Vietnam or Colombia either. I don’t know why. I could afford it, but I just don’t—or rather, I do it sometimes, when it’s truly worth it. But right now, it’s not worth paying to move my things.
Sometimes I think I could just buy two or three pairs of jeans and a couple of t-shirts, all the same but in different colors. For a while in Melbourne, I did that. It was winter. I had Stan Smith sneakers, two pairs of jeans—one blue and one black—and sweaters in red, black, and gray, and a green coat. That’s it. I felt so confident, and it’s probably the time in my life when I had the most romantic success.
I felt like I had more time and money. I didn’t worry about shopping, choosing outfits, or what to wear. I focused on living my life, not on appearances.
Material possessions keep demanding time and money from you, even after you’ve paid for them. You don’t just buy them and you’re done. You have to wash, care for, store, and fix them. And you keep spending money. You have to move them, carry them with you, sort them, sell them, give them away. And so you keep losing time, mostly taking care of things. Not to mention that you start having thoughts like, “I need to buy a lamp that fits there, a shirt that matches the skirt, that new cutting board, that new yoga outfit.” And so, you keep acquiring more things you’ll have to deal with.
Right now, I’m in Milan, looking at my garage, which is somewhere between a junk shop in Ho Chi Minh and my childhood bedroom. I think: in Jericoacoara, I didn’t have to worry about any of these things, and hair, sweat, and outfits didn’t matter.
But how do other girls do it?
Every time I look at my sweaty armpits, I ask myself, how do other girls do it? Why don’t they have wrinkled clothes? Why do they have beautiful hair? Why are they dressed so well? Why do they exude that sense of beauty, order, elegance, and wealth, while I always look like I’ve just run away from home? Like I’ve fled in a hurry, grabbing random things.
Even my dad asked me once, as he accompanied me to buy a 26-liter trekking backpack for short trips of one or two days. At first, I didn’t know what to answer because there wasn’t a specific reason why I didn’t look the way I or others expected me to. But deep down, even I wanted to present myself perfectly, like the others.
I’d love to wear a lace top for breakfast on the beach in Jericoacoara, show off a long skirt for an evening in Cartagena, a white dress for an afternoon in Byron Bay, a floral dress for a stroll in Naples, a red bikini with a matching sarong in Puerto Escondido, or a cropped but not too cropped shirt for hiking in Chapada Diamantina.
But no. It’s always a mess. Everything is scattered between my parents’ house and a garage, everything is temporary, the clothes are wrinkled, some no longer fit, others need mending, some need to be sold, and others given away. I don’t know where things are, I lose them, buy them again, wander around packing bags and suitcases, already thinking about what I’ll wear in two months. I have to think of everything, and this “everything” has to be minimal. I need to be prepared for cold, heat, rain, sports, the beach, the mountains, and the city.
But isn’t that too much to ask?
So, I take a moment to think and tell my dad that maybe the others don’t know Brazil. Maybe they haven’t seen the Amazon and the caimans, haven’t done a three-day trek in Chile, haven’t swum in Lake Atitlán, haven’t spent a month in a yoga retreat, don’t know every corner of Cusco and the Sacred Valley, haven’t attended a tango show in Buenos Aires, haven’t seen the penguins in Ushuaia, haven’t spent three weeks in the middle of Colombia’s coffee plantations, haven’t ridden a scooter around Puerto Escondido, haven’t taken a 28-hour bus ride across the legendary Ruta 40, haven’t stayed in every hostel in Guatemala, and haven’t jumped into ice-cold waters (because that would ruin their hair).
Or maybe they have. Maybe these girls have done all those things and still look amazing. If you’re one of these girls, please write me a comment and tell me how you do it.
