Sto visitando in una cantina, una winery, come si dice qui. Si trova nella costa est della Tasmania, che è una meravigliosa isola, a 4555 chilometri dall’Antartide, famosa per i diavoletti della Tasmania, animaletti neri che sembrano un malefici, in via di estinzione.
Dico meravigliosa perché è fatta di montagne, cascate, laghi, vigneti, acqua cristallina e spiagge bianche, colline e parchi naturali. Parlo inglese, con il mio solito accento italiano e racconto alla donna dietro al banco, che prima vivevo in Italia, poi mi sono trasferita in Australia, poi mi sono ri-trasferita in Italia e poi mi sono ri-trasferita in Australia. E mentre lo spiego, mi rendo conto che probabilmente io non sto bene, ma lei non fa una piega, ride fragorosamente.
Ciao sono Ilaria! Ti scrivo da Hobart, Tasmania, la terra più a sud di tutta l’Australia. Ho fatto un bel road trip e macinato chilometri a piedi e in macchina.
Ho preso una decisione sulla mia newsletter, uscirà sempre di mercoledì, ma in maniera più sporadica, ogni tanto insomma. In modo che scrivere sia sempre un piacere e non un obbligo settimanale. Da un po’ di tempo a questa parte, mi impegno quotidianamente a non riempirmi di cose da fare e cerco di lasciare spazi vuoti. Che non devono essere necessariamente riempiti.

Gli australiani sono gentili
Lei è una signora bionda, credo che abbia la mia età, ma ho questo vizio di chiamare signora chi ha un’atteggiamento più formale e adulto del mio. E forse gli altri pensano lo stesso di me. È alta, ha i capelli corti, chiarissimi, una bella pettinatura, parla tanto, ride, si muove, è velocissima. Vado per pagare la bottiglia di Riesling che ho scelto come souvenir dalla Tasmania, terra di vini e di formaggi e lei mi dice: ‘‘Sai cosa? Bentornata in Australia!’’ Cioè io entro in un negozio, con l’intenzione di comprare qualcosa e me ne esco con un regalo in mano. Non è normale.
Rimango un po’ in imbarazzo, la ringrazio, le prometto che tornerò, mi augura una bella vita in Australia e ci salutiamo. Poi salgo in macchina e penso che così sono gli australiani. Negli anni in cui ho vissuto in Australia, mi è capitato con una certa frequenza di ricevere regali, birre offerte e favori da perfetti sconosciuti. L’altro giorno ero al pub, ho ordinato una birra, ma mi sono confusa, ne avrei voluta un’altra. Glielo dico ma così tanto per dire, mi è venuto spontaneo esclamare: “Oh nooo” davanti alla birra “sbagliata”. Ma il barista che aveva già spinato la birra indesiderata, me l’ha regalata e poi mi ha fatto pagare solo quella desiderata.
Qualche anno fa, avevo appena fondato Just Australia, facciamo visti e servizi per l’Australia. Uno studente era venuto in ufficio con l’idea di richiedere un visto permanente in futuro e ci aveva portato tutta la documentazione per farcela visionare. Documenti importanti e originali: il certificato di nascita dall’Italia, una lettera di presentazione firmata dal suo ex datore di lavoro, una copia certificata del suo passaporto. Facciamo una chiacchierata e se ne va.
Dopo un’ora ricevo una telefonata sul mio cellulare. È uomo, australiano, mi spiega che è salito su un taxi e ha visto che sul sedile c’era una cartellina con dei documenti che gli sono sembravano importanti. Ha visto che c’era un biglietto da visita, era il mio e mi ha chiamato per avvisarmi. Gentile, penso, adesso bisogna capire come recuperarli. “Ho rimandato il taxi nel tuo ufficio, è già pagato, devi solo scendere quando ti chiama il tassista e recuperarli”. Io rimango senza parole. Lo ringrazio e metto giù. Ma non lo ringrazio come avrei voluto, lo ringrazio incredula, di fretta, imbarazzata. Mi capita spesso nella vita di non avere la risposta pronta, magari mi viene qualche minuto o persino qualche ora dopo.
Mi ricordo che quando mi sono trasferita qui per la prima volta, stavo andando all’università in bicicletta. Un signore, australiano, anche lui avrà avuto la mia età, ma lo chiamiamo signore, mi supera e mi dice “Good morning!” e io rimango ancora una volta sorpresa, pensando “ma lo conosco?” Poi negli anni ho capito che gli australiani sono così: attaccano bottone, ti salutano, ti chiedono cose, sono curiosi, ti regalano cose.
Io penso che…
Non voglio dire “noi italiani”, quindi dirò: “io penso che…” e tirerò un mini-pippone, qui di seguito. Io penso di essere cresciuta in una cultura un po’ più opportunistica, sto scoprendo ora il senso del regalo, del gratis, del fare qualcosa senza aspettarsi o chiedere nulla in cambio. A volte mi sembra strano che anche i miei amici mi facciano dei regali anche quando non è il mio compleanno o dei favori anche quando non li chiedo. Faccio fatica a chiedere, anche se sto imparando, ma mi sembra ancora strano. Mi sento in imbarazzo nel ringraziare e sento spesso questa necessità di sdebitarmi, di essere in debito o difetto. Mi ricordo anche dopo settimane se tocca a me offrire l’aperitivo. Da We Work (il co-working dove ho l’ufficio) ogni volta che c’è qualcosa gratis, uno yogurt, un cioccolatino, un quadernetto, lo arraffo con un mix di gioia e senso di colpa.
Qui in Australia lasciano mobili di design per strada. Da quando sono qui ho già recuperato un bel comodino e una piccola scarpiera. Mentre cammini per strada, puoi vedere una bella lampada, uno sgabello, uno specchio, appoggiato delicatamente per terra. Se ti piace, è tuo. A volte anche io lascio qualcosa per strada e prendo qualcos’altro. Mi ha raccontato il mio vicino che quando stava traslocando, gli è sparita una sedia, perché l’aveva lasciata sul marciapiede mentre portava dentro il tavolo. Qualcuno deve aver pensato che fosse un regalo per i passanti. Però non si è arrabbiato, ha detto che non importa, ne avrebbe comprata un’altra più bella. O magari ne avrebbe trovata un’altra per strada più bella.
Vivono su un’altra frequenza.

Sto pedalando su Russell Street, sulla pista ciclabile, sono circondata da altri ciclisti, il cielo è azzurro, sono tanti, stanno tutti andando al lavoro, sono le 8.30 di mattina qui a Melbourne. Molti di loro sono già andati a hot yoga, in palestra oppure a correre.

I bought wine, but didn’t pay for it
I’m visiting a winery, as they say here. It’s located on the east coast of Tasmania, a wonderful island 4,555 kilometers from Antarctica, famous for Tasmanian devils—small black creatures that look rather sinister and are unfortunately endangered.
I call it wonderful because it’s made of mountains, waterfalls, lakes, vineyards, crystal-clear waters, white beaches, rolling hills, and national parks. I speak English, with my usual Italian accent, and I tell the woman behind the counter that I used to live in Italy, then I moved to Australia, then I moved back to Italy, and then I moved back to Australia again. And as I explain it, I realize that maybe something is not quite right with me, but she doesn’t flinch—she just bursts into laughter.

Australians are kind
She’s a blonde woman, I think she’s about my age, but I have this habit of calling "signora" anyone who has a more formal and mature attitude than I do. And maybe others think the same about me. She’s tall, has short, very light-colored hair, a great hairstyle, talks a lot, laughs, moves around—she’s incredibly fast. I go to pay for the bottle of Riesling I’ve chosen as a souvenir from Tasmania, a land of wines and cheeses, and she says to me: "You know what? Welcome back to Australia!" So basically, I walk into a store intending to buy something and walk out with a gift. That’s not normal.
I feel a bit embarrassed, I thank her, I promise I’ll come back, she wishes me a great life in Australia, and we say goodbye. Then I get into my car and think—this is just how Australians are. During the years I lived in Australia, I frequently received gifts, free beers, and favors from complete strangers.
The other day at a pub, I ordered a beer, but I got confused—I had actually wanted a different one. I mentioned it casually, just an instinctive "Oh nooo" in front of the "wrong" beer. But the bartender, who had already poured it, simply handed it to me as a gift and then only charged me for the one I actually wanted.
A few years ago, when I had just founded Just Australia, where we handle visas and services for Australia, a student came into the office with the idea of applying for a permanent visa in the future. He had brought all his important documents for us to review—his original birth certificate from Italy, a reference letter signed by his former employer, a certified copy of his passport. We had a chat, and then he left.
An hour later, I received a phone call on my mobile. It was a man, an Australian. He explained that he had gotten into a taxi and noticed a folder with some documents on the seat—documents that seemed important. He saw my business card inside and called me to let me know. How kind, I thought, but now we needed to figure out how to get them back.
"I sent the taxi back to your office, it’s already paid for, you just have to go downstairs when the driver calls you and pick them up."
I was speechless. I thanked him and hung up. But I didn’t thank him the way I should have—I thanked him in disbelief, in a rush, feeling awkward. I often struggle to come up with the right response in the moment—it usually comes to me a few minutes or even hours later.
I remember when I first moved here, I was riding my bike to university. A man—Australian, around my age, but let’s call him a "signore"—rode past me and said, "Good morning!" And once again, I was caught off guard, thinking, "Wait, do I know him?"
Over the years, I’ve come to understand that Australians are just like that: they strike up conversations, they greet you, they ask you questions, they’re curious, they give you things.
I think that…
I don’t want to say "we Italians", so I’ll say "I think that…" and deliver a mini rant right here. I think I grew up in a culture that’s a bit more opportunistic, and I’m only now discovering the meaning of giving, of things being free, of doing something without expecting or asking for anything in return.
Sometimes it feels strange to me that my friends give me gifts even when it’s not my birthday or do favors for me even when I haven’t asked. I struggle to ask for things, even though I’m learning, but it still feels weird. I feel awkward when I thank someone, and I often have this need to repay them somehow, like I’m always in debt or at a disadvantage. I even remember weeks later if it’s my turn to buy the aperitif.
At WeWork (the coworking space where I have my office), every time something is free—yogurt, chocolate, a notebook—I grab it with a mix of joy and guilt.
Here in Australia, people leave designer furniture on the street. Since I arrived, I’ve already picked up a lovely bedside table and a small shoe rack. As you walk around, you might see a beautiful lamp, a stool, or a mirror, carefully placed on the ground. If you like it, it’s yours.
Sometimes I do the same—I leave something out and pick something else up. My neighbor told me that when he was moving, he left a chair on the sidewalk while carrying in his table. By the time he came back, it was gone. Someone must have thought it was a gift for passersby. But he didn’t get mad—he just said it didn’t matter, he’d buy a better one. Or maybe he’d find an even nicer one on the street.
They live on a different frequency.
