Everything that went wrong
Io, volontaria in Guatemala. Episodio Tre. Abbiamo visto come ci sono finita a fare la volontaria in un centro di yoga, in Guatemala. Perché le mie scelte sono impulsive. Abbiamo visto com’è la mia giornata tipo. Mi sveglio alle 5, vado a dormire alle 21. E abbiamo iniziato ad intuire che non è stata un’esperienza positiva. Nonostante il lago, il vulcano e la giungla.
Prima di procedere, ho attivato il bottone Buy Me a Spritz. Se ti piacciono i miei racconti di viaggio, li trovi utili e magari ti danno anche la carica di partire da solo/a, puoi offrirmi un aperitivo.
Che poi io lo sento, quando c’è qualcosa che non va. Lo sentiamo tutti, dai. Solo che lo soffochiamo, questo sentire. Il mio analista mi dice sempre: “E cosa sente?” “Niente” gli ho risposto per anni. Perché lo copro con gli aperitivi, le mille chiacchiere, gli impegni, l’essere brillanti, le risate, il piacere a tutti, il fare le cose che non voglio fare.
Poi sono venuta qui. E pensavo che già il fatto di viaggiare da sola per il Sud America, con un biglietto di sola andata, mi avesse liberato. Invece no. Il Centro di Yoga del Guatemala, mi ha ricordato che c’è ancora tanta strada da fare.
Innanzitutto già al colloquio avevo capito che erano tutti matti, lì, al Centro di Yoga. Frasi come “Ah, l’ultima volontaria se n’è andata da un giorno all’altro” oppure “Perché sai, noi chiediamo un contributo per fare volontariato” dovevano farmi riflettere. (Ndr. Non ho pagato nessun contributo). Ho invece risposto: “Sì va bene… l’11 giugno sono lì…. certo, certo… resterò per un mese”. Perché? Perché non mi sono mai ascoltata. Perché avrei dovuto farlo in Guatemala?
Il proprietario
Questo personaggio che non ha mai pensato di andare in analisi. E invece avrebbe dovuto. E a 50 anni si aggira ancora libero di ferire, dominato dal suo ego. Questo personaggio che non sbaglia mai. Che ha un business, ma non vuole spendere soldi. Che critica ogni tua mossa, perché lui l’avrebbe fatto meglio. Hai presente quelle persone dalla mente contorta che ti rinfacciano frasi di tre anni fa mai pronunciate e che quando ti guardano con gli occhi iniettati di sangue tu dentro di te pensi: “What the fuck?” Ecco questo era il proprietario del Centro di Yoga. Nonché insegnante di yoga. Che uno dice boh, ma non dovresti essere un attimo zen? Dopo una settimana di follie gli ho detto: “Per favore, non rivolgermi più la parola, grazie”. Da quel momento in poi parlo solo con la manager del Centro di Yoga.
La manager
Altro personaggio. Con problemi diversi, dal proprietario. Lei bravissima insegnante di yoga. Io con lei ho imparato a fare la headstand. Siccome io sono sempre sicura di fallire, non ci ho mai nemmeno provato seriamente a fare la verticale. In quella gabbia di matti, mi sono sentita di dare una chance alla mia autostima. Lei fuori come un balcone. Ogni giorno litigava con il proprietario del Centro di Yoga, che abbiamo visto, non era proprio a piombo. Tanto brava a insegnare yoga, quanto pericolosa nelle relazioni umane. Da un momento all’altro poteva sbottare e risponderti malissimo. Per poi tornare nelle sue sembianze da angelo. Per poi ridere con una risata diabolica e rumorosa. Anche durante la colazione in silenzio.
Gli altri volontari
Gli altri volontari, manco quelli erano normali. Cioè sembrava che fossimo tutti lì a risolvere i nostri problemi esistenziali, invece che semplicemente mandare avanti un Centro di Yoga. Penso di aver sentito le seguenti frasi “Healing” e “Everything happens for a reason” più volte nel Centro di Yoga che nella mia vita. Allora quello che si occupava del giardino, spariva la mattina e rientrava la sera, penso di averci parlato due volte in un mese. L’altro che si occupava del bar, tanto una brava persona, ma stava guarendo dal suo male interiore e quindi non era presente con noi, che intanto eravamo tutti caduti nell’abisso dei nostri trigger. Sembrava una puntata di “Nine Perfect Strangers”, quella serie con Nicole Kidman. Solo che noi, magari fossimo stati nove, almeno ci sarebbe stata un po’ di varietà nello spettro degli irrisolti personali. Forse il giardiniere aveva capito tutto.
Gli ospiti
Eravamo in bassa stagione. Quindi gli ospiti erano pochi e rappresentavano questi personaggi, che venivano da fuori, dal mondo reale e che si ritrovavano a partecipare a questo spettacolo di casi umani, sul lago Atitlan.
Altre disavventure
Mi sono presa un parassita che si mangiava tutto quello che mangiavo io. Sai quella cosa del verme solitario? Mi è successo, veramente! Ed è abbastanza figo perché mangi e non ingrassi. Poi sono stata punta da uno scorpione, in camera mia. In quel momento, ho brevemente riflettuto sul da farsi. Nessuno avrebbe potuto aiutarmi nel cuore della notte, perché il primo ospedale è a mezz’ora di barca. E non ci sono barche di notte. L’unica cosa che posso fare è girarmi dall’altra parte, sperando di rialzarmi la mattina seguente. Spoiler: mi sono svegliata.
Il paese
Il paese è un luogo maledetto e maledettamente povero. E alle 6.30 di sera, quando cala il sole, c’è un coprifuoco morale. Perché puoi essere morso da uno dei tanti cani randagi, oppure importunato dai local, che si aggirano ubriachi con il machete, mentre le donne sono chiuse in casa, vittime degli uomini.
Però il lago, il vulcano e la giungla sono tanto belli. E forse è per quello che sono rimasta. Per vivere un’esperienza in mezzo alla natura, per vivere in una comunità e conoscere da vicino la cultura guatemalteca sul lago, con tutti i problemi del caso. D’altronde non viaggio solo per vedere le cose belle.

🇦🇺 Me, a volunteer in Guatemala. Episode Three. We have seen how I ended up volunteering at a yoga center in Guatemala. Because my choices are impulsive. We have seen what my typical day is like. I wake up at 5am, go to bed at 9pm. And we began to realize that it has not been a positive experience. Despite the lake, the volcano, and the jungle.

You know, I can feel it when something is not right. We all can, right? It's just that we suppress this feeling. My therapist always asks me, "And what do you feel?" "Nothing," I replied for years. Because I cover it up with wine, endless conversations, commitments, being brilliant, laughter, pleasing everyone, doing things I don't want to do.
Then I came here. And I thought that just traveling alone through South America, with a one-way ticket, had freed me. But no. The Yoga Center in Guatemala reminded me that there is still a long way to go.
First of all, I already realized during the interview that everyone at the Yoga Center was crazy. Phrases like "Oh, the last volunteer left overnight" or "Because, you know, we ask for a contribution to volunteer" should have made me think. (Editor's Note: I didn't pay any contribution.) Instead, I replied, "Yes, sure... I'll be there on June 11th... of course, I'll stay for a month." Why? Because I've never listened to myself. Why should I have done that in Guatemala?
The owner
He obviously never thought of going to therapy. But he should have. At 50, he's still free to hurt, dominated by his ego. He never makes mistakes. He has a business but doesn't want to spend money. He criticizes every move you make because he could have done it better. You know those people with twisted minds who throw back phrases from three years ago that were never spoken, and when they look at you with bloodshot eyes, you think to yourself, "What the fuck?" That's the owner of the Yoga Center. Also, a yoga teacher. One would think, shouldn't he be a bit more zen? After a week of madness, I told him, "Please, don't speak to me anymore, thank you." From then on, I only spoke to the Yoga Center manager.
The manager
Another character. With different issues from the owner. She's an excellent yoga teacher. I learned how to do a headstand with her. Since I'm always sure I'll fail, I had never seriously attempted it before. In that cage of crazies, I felt like giving my self-esteem a chance. She was completely unpredictable. Every day, she would argue with the Yoga Center owner, who, as we've seen, wasn't exactly stable. Great at teaching yoga, but dangerous in human relationships. She could explode and respond very poorly at any moment, only to return to her angelic self. Then she'd laugh with a loud, diabolical laugh, even during breakfast in silence.
The other volunteers
The other volunteers, they weren't normal either. It seemed like we were all there to solve our existential problems rather than simply run a Yoga Center. I think I heard the following phrases, "Healing" and "Everything happens for a reason," more times at the Yoga Center than in my life. The guy in charge of the garden would disappear in the morning and return in the evening; I think I spoke to him twice in a month. The one in charge of the bar, a nice person, was healing from his inner demons, so he wasn't present with us while we had all fallen into the abyss of our triggers. It felt like an episode of "Nine Perfect Strangers," that series with Nicole Kidman. Except we might have been nine, at least there would have been some variety in the spectrum of unresolved personal issues. Maybe the gardener had figured it all out.
The guests
It was the low season, so there were few guests, and they represented characters from the real world who found themselves part of this show of human cases by Lake Atitlan.
Other misadventures
I got a parasite that ate everything I ate. You know that thing with the tapeworm? It really happened! It's kind of cool because you eat and don't gain weight. Then I was stung by a scorpion in my room. I briefly thought that no one could help me in the middle of the night because the nearest hospital was half an hour away by boat. And there are no boats at night. The only thing I could do was turn over and hope to wake up the next morning. Spoiler: I woke up.
The town
The town is an incredibly poor place. And at 6:30pm in the evening, when the sun sets, there's a moral curfew. Because you can be bitten by one of the many stray dogs or harassed by locals who wander around drunk with machetes, while the women are locked in their homes, victims of the men.
But the lake, the volcano, and the jungle are so beautiful. And maybe that's why I stayed. To experience life in nature, to live in a community, and get to know Guatemalan culture by the lake, with all its problems. After all, I don't travel just to see beautiful things.

I so wanted to read this episode thanks for the 'normal' definition of the guests!! Omg I laughed out loud on the bus in Mexico reading this! You should write a book. Can't wait for the conclusion!
